Expungement and Other Tall Tales: Exoneration Myths and Facts

This talk, facilitated by criminologist Dr. Adina Thompson, will look at common misconceptions surrounding the exoneration of wrongfully convicted people in Florida. We’ll discuss cleaning up criminal records, compensation, and what happens when innocent folks come home. Bring your questions!


Dr. Adina Thompson, Intake Coordinator, Innocence Project of Florida

Adina M. Thompson earned a PhD in Criminology, Law and Society from the University of Florida in 2014. She serves as the Intake Coordinator at Innocence Project of Florida, a non-profit post-conviction law firm that works to overturn wrongful convictions, help exonerated people reenter a changed world, and prevent future miscarriages of justice.

Dr. Thompson is responsible for reviewing claims of innocence from inmate applicants across the state of Florida. She supervises two intake professionals and a team of law student interns who work together to discover avenues for post-conviction relief that include new DNA and forensic testing opportunities, suppressed evidence, new witness statements, recanted testimony, and ineffective counsel.

Dr. Thompson in an adjunct professor at Arkansas State University and lectures frequently on issues related to wrongful conviction and exoneration.
